چکیده

Systems biology is an excellent research topic for social scientists because systems biologists themselves are fascinated by the social organization of their field. Moreover, as systems biology is an emerging research area, studying it from a sociological perspective allows social scientists to observe how scientists develop new fields of inquiry and practice, and challenge existing institutional and disciplinary structures. This article presents the results of our study of systems biology and of how systems biologists perceive their own field. We start by exploring the organization of knowledge production in systems biology, which is a research ‘approach’ that brings together biologists, physicists, engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists in novel interdisciplinary arrangements. We then look at how systems biology positions itself in relation to other types of biological inquiry, particularly molecular biology.

Criticality and sensitivity analysis of the components of a system

In the design of complex systems there is a great interest to know the relative importance of each of their elements. In this paper, we define a new method for measuring the relative importance of each element of the system. We have to specify that this paper concerns only nonrepairable systems and components. We present a way of calculating the criticality of each component for a complex syste...

Infant mortality in the Flemish Region of Belgium 1999-2008: a time-to-event analysis

BACKGROUND When calculating life expectancy, it is usually assumed that deaths are uniformly distributed within each of the age intervals. As most of the infant deaths are neonatal deaths, this calls for a better assessment for that age group. METHODS The Flemish unified death and birth certificates database for all calendar years between 1999 and 2008 was used. A Kaplan-Meier survival analys...

Methodology for the Calculation of Health Expectancies

In theory, the likelihood by age is derived from the rates of incidence start and finish for each state, in the same way that in calculating life expectancy, the likelihood is obtained from the number of deaths registered. Therefore, the likelihood is calculated taking the flow observed in a specific period and provides information regarding the number of transitions within and outside each state.
